COMBU PROJECT

Combu Education Centre

is a school located in a deprived Riberinho (river people) community reachable only by boat. Established in 1998 the school sought to provide social and cultural development for the residents of Combu who were unable to access education and facilities in the nearby city of Belém.

The school has become the heart of the community and provides otherwise non-existent schooling for local children. The philosophy of the school's education is centred around learning about, valuing and protecting the peoples' traditions and environment.

Music and art have become central to this, inspiring understanding and protection of the rainforest and river.

In order to continue this education the school desperately needs financial support for buildings and equipment. The first building was finally erected in 2006, 8 years after the school was founded. They have been raising funds for further developments since but still have a long way to go. The original building is now too small for the number of students. The area is plagued by malaria and as the current building is just a shelter without windows the children often have to miss school when the mosquito count is high.

The Youth Funding Network has given AmazonArt £1500 to support the Combu Education project.

The Education centre needs a canteen for the children.

We have already raised money to repair the bathrooms, windows, doors but we still need to raise a further £5000.
